[Friday Inspiration] Life is an Echo

Do you remember the first time you experienced an echo and how you felt? Everything you said came back to you, initially you thought someone was playing a fast one on you and you had mixed feelings. You may have experienced a bit of fright if you where alone or it could have been anger at someone repeating what you said when all you needed at the time was help.

‘Life is an echo – what it hears it repeats’

Growing up my grandma will always say ‘be nice to everyone and never throw stones in the market place for you never know who might get hurt; it just might be your mother’. This of course is figuratively speaking. Life is a market place with lots of activities. Do your part and leave everyone better and happier than you met them. Don’t subtract from people but be a blessing.

Along your life’s path you will surely come across difficulties but, you have paid your dues by your good deeds. What comes along your way will not overwhelm you. We all need to be aware of the law of life and be nice to others. If we practice this we don’t need to be preached to; to understand the need to be good to other people.

Whatever we send out in life always have a way of coming back at us. If you are nice to others, God will always line up people along your path when you need help. When my father in-law passed on his younger sister cried saying; ‘who will help my children get a good job?’ Unfortunately my father in-law never helped any of his sons get a job but, they‘ve got great jobs. The saying goes that ‘The evil you do will hunt you’ how about saying ‘the good that you do, the joy that you give to others will come back to you’? Because it sure does.

There are certain things that we must be careful of; the way we treat others, what we say to them consistently and how we treat ourselves. It is so easy to be nice to other people and yet be mean to ourselves. We consistently speak negative words to ourselves and when it begins to manifest we wonder how it happened.

‘Life is an echo you get what you send out. What you sow will catch up with you’
How about ‘life is a boomerang’? You send it out and it comes back to you.

Whatever truth or lie you consistently profess about yourself, your children or anyone comes back as a reality over time. If you continue to tell yourself you are a nobody or that you will not succeed in life , it does happens because the word has been sent out as a seed and it continue to grow until it becomes your reality. There are so many things we say without realising that we are personally setting ourselves up to fail. People have continually called their children ‘Olodo’ some people say it out of fun or maybe the word sounds funny but it mean a ‘dunce’ why would you say that ?

Every negative or positive word that we say repeatedly has a way of becoming a part of our sub consciousness and invariably affects who we become in life. When a child lives with criticism, he learns to be timid. Psychologists and even clergymen have realised this and so they always tell parents to use positive words when speaking to their kids. Why not use the same principle on your self as an adult.

Repeated Negative words sooner than later produces a low self esteem and inferiority complex. Never confuse a low self esteem for humility. Analyze who you are becoming periodically. If you do not like what you see you have the power to change it.
Repeated positive words create a ‘can do’ attitude that brings out the best in you. When you continually tell yourself positive words, you become who you speak of.

Everything in life starts from the mind. To succeed in life you must have the right mindset. ‘Life is an echo; speak positive words for you can never be better than the life and the image that you portray of yourself through your words.
Always speak words that are consistent with what you want to achieve in life.

Do you know that the words that we speak are a true confirmation of what our core belief and values are? Let your actions be consistent with what your beliefs are. If what you exhibit is not what you want in your life then, you must work on your self and start afresh.

4 Steps to Living a Contented life

If you must live a happy life and a life free from clutter, from heartaches, from meaningless activities then you must be prepared to live a life of contentment, a life that is your own, a life that is authentic that represent who you are. Not a life that you have copied from others.
And how can you go about achieving this, I would like to outline four steps that you can take to achieve a life of contentment. These steps involve activities that we know about already but, sometimes we are not awake or alive to them and even if we are, we are not willing to go down that road.

If you must live a life of contentment and happiness, the first step is to know your purpose:
What is your purpose? Everyone is created with a purpose; our purpose is like our manual, our reason for being and our big WHY. Everything that has a reason has a purpose to it and through that, every life is created by God. Sometimes as parents when you talk to your kids, maybe you see them involved in a certain activity and you ask them, what are you doing? Sometimes the child says ‘I don’t know and then you say if you don’t know why are you doing it?’ why do you keep at it? So if you look at this analogy and bring it to your life. Ask yourself, why am I here? What is the purpose to all the various activities that I get involved in. What are my motives? If you don’t know the answer, if you don’t know your WHY, if you don’t know why you do what you do, then it’s meaningless. You are running activities, going around in a merry go round.

In a merry go round you might enjoy the first two to three trips but after a while, you get tired and just want to get off the merry go round because, it’s going in motion and nothing is happening, and so that is how it is when you are living a life filled with so much activities and busyness, but has got no meaning to it.
If you must live a life of contentment, a life of joy and peace and happiness you must know for sure what your purpose is. And how do you know your purpose, take time and reflect on your life. Note down the things that you are presently involved in, things you enjoy doing and things you would love to do even if no one offers to pay you for such services. Ask yourself some questions and above all speak to God. Have a one on one conversation with Him. Have a heart to heart discuss with God. He exist, he created you so talk to Him. He has the manual to your life and existence.

I have a workbook called ‘The Quest for Purpose’ it is a simple manual that will help you find out what your purpose is.
Look out for questions you should ask yourself:
What are your inspirations?
What are your aspirations?
What value do you place on yourself?
And what is your soft spot.
What are you passionate about?
Make sure your answers are written down. The answers that you provide to the questions give you a glimpse of what your life is about.
When you are able to see the big picture of your life then you able to align yourself with it. you don’t live someone’s else life, you don’t pretend to be someone else. Your life becomes much more enjoyable and it becomes fun to live with yourself because you know who you are and what your life purpose is.

And the second step
Now that you know your purpose and have aligned yourself to it, the next thing is to have a goal, a plan to achieve your life’s purpose. To set a goal, get a paper and a pen and write down the big picture, the big goal of what you want to achieve through your purpose. Maybe your life purpose is to be of service to others. Make a list of the avenues and ways you can be of service to others. How do you hope to achieve this daily, weekly? Break down your life’s big picture goal into tasks and activities.
How do I become of service to others?
How do I present my service to others?
What can I do to be of service to others?
If this becomes your business, How do I monetise my purpose?

This is your goal, broken down into manageable parts that you can actualise within a certain period. There must be a period within which you must achieve your goals because if you do not have time limit to accomplish each task, there is no motivation to get them done.
Everyday live your life with intention and on purpose because you know what you want to accomplish, and when you wake up every morning, you wake up ready to achieve something because every bit that you achieve add up to the bigger picture of your life.

A goal is only a goal if it is written down. Define your purpose; your goal stands for your purpose. When you define it you break it down to manageable parts, break it down to time frame and this goals should be realistic don’t set ambiguous goals that can not be achieved, if you work online, you don’t say I want to earn 1 million dollars, you should say you want to earn one million dollars within a certain time frame. And then what you can do is to break down the money into weekly, monthly achievable chunks and activities that well lead to its actualization. This is how you can set your goal that is realistic, achievable and measureable.

The third step to living a life of contentment Is living without clutter, Clutter could be physical or emotional. We tend to pile up things, physical properties and emotional baggage in our physical space and in our hearts, we get involved in so many activities that don’t really serve us, but because of distraction, because of things that we see along the path of life, we tend to accumulate stuffs. We accumulate different things into our lives and on the long run our physical space is packed with things we don’t need. Emotionally our hearts are preoccupied with issues that have scared us. If we must live a life of contentment, a life that brings peace and satisfaction a life that is yours that is authentic, you must learn to go one day at a time and learn to take on things that will serve you, things that will define who you are and not things that you use to fill up space.

Most times we buy things that we aren’t in need of. We buy them because they come at a good bargain, or our friends have them and we don’t want to be left out. If you have got clothes or accessories that you haven’t wore in over a year, chances are you don’t need them or you have forgotten about them. This is clutter that needs to be cleaned out. There are so many people out there who will be happy when you share with them.
Then we have emotional clutter, we have things weighing us down, things that upset us from as far back as we can remember. There might be forgiveness issues in our life we have to work out, this pile up and form emotional clutter. With this sort of clutter, we are not able to think straight, it affects our reasoning and it affects our lives. We cannot live a life of content in this type of scenario. Instead it causes us pain and heartaches. Until we are willing to let go and move on, our emotions will be running on half capacity.

If you know you have got emotional clutter, please take the decision to let go of your pains and maybe hatred or bitterness. It is time to go through a healing process and start afresh
And the fourth step of living a contented life is simplifying your life style. In recent times I have read of people who have taken the drastic decisions of leaving metropolitan cities and going into the country side giving up all their properties. Giving up all things that pertain to making life easy like a microwave, washing machine, they just want to live close to nature and eat organically grown food. This is their way of living a simplified life. I don’t necessarily advocate that for you. It is my belief that a simplified life is one that is not complicated by unnecessary cares and worries. A simplified life is a life lived based on one’s conviction and so you don’t run in several directions just so you fit into the social life of others. A simplified life does not demand that you please others. You live a minimal life if it makes you happy.

To live a simplified life, first define who you are, what you want and live your truth. Live your purpose, define your goals and live in a cutter free environment. If you follow this path I bet you are on your way to simplifying your life style where you don’t do things because it will please others.
Living a contented life is living a life that does not seek to be complicated. A contented life is living a life that serves you and the purpose for which God has created you to live. Stay on your track and run your race.
I wish you peace and love always.

[Motivational] Life is a Journey

“All of life is a journey which paths we take, what we look back on, and what we look forward to is up to us. We determine our destination, what kind of road we will take to get there, and how happy we are when we get there.” – Unknown

Life is a journey. As with all journey one makes in life it could be boring, interesting or bleak. It is the duty of the traveller to spice up their journey. But then it is often said that the essence of living is not just in the journey but what happens on the way. It is important to have fun and learn some life lessons along the way.

I took a road trip recently and my kids kept complaining about the length of the journey. After a while they slept off. It is funny how we often ‘sleep off’ on our life’s journey when things become boring or uninteresting. We tend to either do something about it or just tune off. Guess what? Whatever you decide to do; your journey will always be ahead of you and must be completed.

I took the road less travelled by, and that has made all the difference. – (Robert Frost) The Road Not Taken

What plans are you making daily to enjoy the journey ahead of you. Are you discovering new things and having fun or you are taking your journey with a grudge? Are you restless with the internal issues about who you are and the journey you have embarked on? It is important to be present to who you are and what your journey is all about. Learn to live in the moment and savour what life has to offer you.

For someone who grew up restless and eager to accomplish new things, I have learnt to take each moment and event in and learn what life is reaching out to me.

To enjoy life’s journey you must have the following

1. A Good Attitude – Life throws us different curve balls, Joyful events and activities only those with a positive attitude will enjoy their journey. It is important to note that life won’t always be rosy but with a good attitude you will be able brave any storm of life.

2. Be People Friendly – On a daily basis, remember to connect with others no one is an island to himself. Learn to connect with people other than your already known friends. Some times all we need is someone to introduce us; if you are not people friendly you would miss out on those things money cannot get you.

3. Learn to Focus on God – Learn to trust God for direction daily. The journey of life requires more than just planning and good intention. Trust God to give you direction in your Life’s journey.

It is finally back to school in less than two weeks, enjoy the remaining part of the holiday with your family and plan for a wonderful last quarter in your business. And remember the joy of life is in the journey that we make the failures and joy we embrace daily. This is what make our life’s journey fun and make us all unique. Learn to have some fun along the way.

[Friday Reflection]Will Their Death Be in Vain?

Today’s post is a deviation from my usual Friday inspiration post. This is as a result of events that have shaken everyone in the nation even to its foundation.
It’s been 5 days since the tragic plane crash that killed 153 passengers on board and several people on ground. My heart has been heavy to the point where I had nightmares as if I was a passenger reliving the whole event. Momentarily during my day’s activities I see flashes of the Ayenes’ a family of 4 kids, father, mother and mother in law and I just can’t take it. I can’t wrap my head round how this lovely family would actually come home from their base abroad just to die in a plane crash. How is it possible that the airline company say the plane was in a perfect state and yet the nation mourns for over 153 people burnt to dead?

So why did Ehime Aikhomu die? Or Tosin Anibaba, or the mother that was pulled out from the rubbles in a protective position trying her best to protect her baby. Alas she was in no position to save hers either. Why did they die? What is the justification?
Couldn’t this crash have been prevented? My heart is filled with so many questions than answers. The anguish is simply indescribable

Will their death bring about a change in the regulation and running of the aviation industry? Will their death make our leaders have a human heart? Who will take responsibility for the death of the children who had their lives ahead of them? What do you tell the wife/husband who have suddenly become a widow (widower) or the kids who have now become the wards of the state because the plane crashed on their home and their parents got killed in the process? Will it be business as usual where standards and safety is compromised for the few thousands that will crease the palms of some heartless authorities?

We do not need tears from the minister or the president, we want solutions. The blood of the children could not have been wasted for us to go back to business as usual. This is the tipping point. 153 souls and more can not die for nothing.

Sanitizing the Nigerian aviation industry shouldn’t be an up hill task. We need planes that are between 0 to 5years old. Radar that works, employees that are willing to work even with a smile on their faces. Workers that will not exploit the airline carriers or the passengers. Bribery and corruption shouldn’t be our way of life. We need a government that will not only console and cry. We need action, a turn around in every area of our lives as a nation.

My heart goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one and I pray that God console and comfort every one of us. This must be the tipping point in our nation. Let them not die in vain.

In Peace and Love,

Pamela Evbota

[Mid Week Inspiration] Blossom Nnodim

On Mid week inspiration i would like to share with you my interview with Blossom Nnodim. She is a blogger, a compere, and a full time career person. She will be the first non business person i will be featuring on mid week inspiration. The whole essence is to let other women out there who have a career and are also interested in owning their own website or blog know that it is possible to do both. But then you have to plan your time properly to be able to do both.

1. So, who is Blossom Nnodim?
I am the personality behind the brand blcompère which grew out of a passion to anchor events to a superb finish. Consequently, the brand grew to encompass my favorite summary of myself as shown below:
…my name is Blossom of the blcompère brand. I am a soon to be published Author, a certified Blogger and an amazing Compère and most recently, a lousy Designer… as simple as A. B. C. D…

2. How did you get into blogging and the PR field?
It started as a fun lifestyle that was strongly influenced by two Nigerian brands name Bella Naija and Ofili Speaks. I took it more serious after attending a boot camp in Lagos organized by the founder of Ofili Speaks, Okechukwu Ofili in October, 2011. I consequently obtained a proper domain in February, 2012 at www.blcompere.com and had to delete the old one www.blcompere.blogspot.com as I wanted to rebrand afresh.

3. Was it always your passion?
Not at all. It was a way of having fun and sharing my boring ideas and non-amusing jokes with the world.
On rebranding, the blog focus can be summarized as “Triple M” which is explained thus:
• Ministry: This explores my belief in God and the plethora of issues that can be garnered in the walk to perfection.
• Marriage: This effectively explores the home front inclusive of relationship based issues in the home. It can mildly talk about cooking recipes and spontaneously move to more extreme issues like sex, family finance, managing 3rd parties etc.
• Market Square: This is a broad area that encompasses the career person, the business oriented individual, work place issues etc.
4. Who have you worked with?
I have worked with the following brands:
1. All About Kids; a registered educational (support service) organization based in Abuja.
2. Pamela Evbota, the author of “How to raise kids without losing it”
3. Propland Associates; a firm of Estate Surveyors incorporated in 2003 to practice the profession of Real Estate Management services in the country.
4. Red Chilli Chinese Takeaway & Delivery, Abuja.
5. Ruff ‘n’ Tumble; a company that designs, produces and retails a line of children’s clothing from 12months – 16years for both boys and girls.
6. Pro Training Centre Ltd, Lagos.

5. How do you keep yourself ahead in the game?
I read widely and I also ensure that my social capital is always updated and enhanced.

6. What do you feel is your signature, what makes you stand out from the crowd?
My social capital. It is what I can modestly say to be amazing at the moment.
Here is a summary as at 31st May, 2012.
Twitter: www.twitter.com/blcompere (6,710 plus followers)
Facebook: www.facebook.com/blcompere (4,380 “likes” on the page)
BBM: 2776B6E0 (1,155 Contacts)
Website: www.blcompere.com (3,810 plus Unique visitors from 54 different countries, since the launch date of February 24th, 2012)
These are the ones I implore more although there are other social media platforms I have subscribed to.

7. What has been the best part of your career so far?
The joy I feel doing what I actually love to do and being paid for it as well.

8. What has been your proudest moment so far?
The mail I got from my client Red Chilli Chinese Takeaway & Delivery, Abuja, informing me that their sales have taken an upward surge in just 6 weeks of doing business with my brand.

9. What advice would you give to anyone trying to break into your field?
Develop your social capital first and then announce yourself. This makes it very easy for you to have bragging rights in the business.

[Press Release] The Laziest Book In Africa

Today’s post is a Press Release from my friend Okechukwu Ofili. I have read a portion of his new book and i look forward to getting a copy for myself. Trust Okechukwu Ofili to deliver a world class message in a simple form.

2 years ago, author, speaker and blogger Okechukwu Ofili shared his stupidity with the world in the hilariously successful “How Stupidity Saved My Life.” Everything seemed to be going well for the engineer turned blogger turned speaker, but all that changed when he visited the doctor’s office for a routine check-up and was diagnosed with a life threatening disease. He later found out that his diagnosis was a result of over working himself at his job. After seeing so many people burnt out from work, he decided to pen his second book to show that contrary to popular belief, Laziness can actually save your life! The result is the witty HOW LAZINESS SAVED MY LIFE: A collection of radical business ideas for tired, overworked and frustrated people looking for an easier way to get stuff done!

How Laziness Saved My Life is a hilarious attack at the way corporations and businesses push themselves and their employees to the brink of stress. With chapters such as “Three Things I Learned From Getting Kicked In The Head” and “Why We Need Fewer Meetings and Managers” Ofili is able to poke fun at the work institution as we know it but at the same time offers up simple solutions for Managers and Entrepreneurs for getting the most out of themselves and their employees without killing anyone in the process. If you have ever been stressed at work or felt like strangling your Manager then you need to get this book. But don’t take my word for it, after all I am just the author writing in third person…see what others are saying about it:

Grabs you from the first page and never lets you go…until you are done or NEPA takes light. –Okechukwu Ofili

The book is so intelligently written and wickedly funny, it is as if I wrote it myself. –Okechukwu Ofili

HOW LAZINESS SAVED MY LIFE is a must read for Managers and Business Leaders! Get a copy for your boss and one for your bosses cat…it’s that good! –Okechukwu Ofili
